Building Nanostructures From Below and Putting Them to Use for Energy Conversion

Nanomaterials with quantum confinement of electrons and high specific surfaces have spurred new research directions and are expected to enable new generations of devices. We have developed a number of bottom-up approaches to the growth of well-defined nanostructures. This talk will highlight our recent efforts on the nonhydrolytic synthesis of ultrathin crystalline wires of TiO2 (anatase) with tunable diameters from 5 nm down to ~4 Å, reaching the regime of atomic wires with the true one-dimensionality (1D). It is shown that the anatase titania atomic wires could be doped and stabilized with nitrogen species by introducing suitable nitrogen-containing molecules. I will then move on to present our recent work on exploring another nanomaterial of ZnO tetrapods we developed with thin arms for novel photoanodes of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Our systematic studies have established that such photoanode architecture features good crystallinity, network forming ability, limited electron-hopping interjunctions, and a decent roughness factor. We have achieved high efficiency with these solar cells even when the photoanodes were not calcined, opening a new avenue for the development of flexible solar cells.
